Drug Gives Couch Potato Mice Benefits Of A Workout

NEW YORK - Here’s a couch potato’s dream: What if a drug could help you gain some of the benefits of exercise without working up a sweat? Scientists reported Thursday that there is such a drug — if you happen to be a mouse.

Sedentary mice that took the drug for four weeks burned more calories and had less fat than untreated mice. And when tested on a treadmill, they could run about 44 percent farther and 23 percent longer than untreated mice.

Just how well those results might translate to people is an open question. But someday, researchers say, such a drug might help treat obesity, diabetes and people with medical conditions that keep them from exercising.

“We have exercise in a pill,” said Ron Evans, an author of the study. “With no exercise, you can take a drug and chemically mimic it.”

Evans, of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute reports the work with colleagues in a paper published online Thursday by the journal Cell.

They also report that in mice that did exercise training, a second drug made their workout much more effective at boosting endurance. After a month of taking that drug and exercising, mice could run 68 percent longer and 70 percent farther than other mice that exercised but didn’t get the drug.

Both drugs have been studied by researchers for other uses. The no-exercise drug is in advanced human testing to see if it can prevent a complication of heart bypass surgery.

Evans noted the drugs might prove irresistible for professional athletes who seek an illegal edge. He said his team has developed detection tests for use by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Evans said he has no financial interest in either drug or the test.

Open Question: Question about my regime/schedule of this Weight-loss supplement?

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Well I am glad I can type as much as I want. I am 17, 86kgs, 5′3′ and Female.

Well I’ve decided to take a weight-loss supplement to help my weight-loss. I can lose 3 times as much and it is clinically proven. Eating 2000 calories, 30minute cardiovascular workout. Which is walking/running to me five days a week, but I workout 6 days a week. What I was wondering was once I get up at 5am and drink water early in the morning like the Japanese do with this take Super HCA tablet.. At 5.30am I will eat breakfast which is normally a cearel such as ‘Nutragrain, Just Right or something similar or if there is no cearel I will eat wholemeal toast (2 slices with margerine and maybe a spread such as vegemite or marmite. There pretty similar to me. Anyway 15 minutes after this which is 5.45am to 6.15am I will walk/run on the treadmil. Its pretty intense. Treadmill says I burn about 280-350 calories in a half an hour session. At 6.15am I will do a 15minute session of weight lifting of dumbelss which are about 5-6kgs. It is a comfortable weight for me. At 6.30am I will head to the shower and get ready for school and leave for the bus at 7.50am. I will then have a liquid breakfast called ‘Up & Go’ this is about 203 calories and is high in protein and fibre. Next I will eat at 11.05am and I will have maybe a lite yoghurt or some fruit. At 1pm I will take a tablet and at lunch which is at 1.30pm to 2.10pm I will have a wholemeal sandwich with contents such as cheese or sometimes (Fat free) chicken or ham. (No offense to vegetarians or vegans) with some fruit and almond nuts. I will eat again at 4pm when I return home from school and eat maybe some crackers with cheese or small bowl of popcorn or maybe even another lite yoghurt or fruit. Again at before dinner I will need to take another tablet, this is at 5.30pm Dinner which is now around 6pm I will eat something vegetarian or something like chicken in a stirfry or if I am busy to cook I would eat subway 6inch less than 6 grams of fat subs. Through out the day I drink alot of water. I will be exercising half an hour a day for 5 days. The supplement has no side effects and the pharmacist reccomends it. All clear for the doctor for a exercise regime. I eat a typical amount of 1500 calories a day.

How is this. Please give me your opinion.
If you had calculated my bmi it says im obese..
